The box opens, and I pull out the small evergreen tree. On each branch, I string brilliant purple lights because it was her favorite color. I can almost hear her call my name as I unwrap each ornament that she saved. I hear her tell me the stories of the kids from her many years in the classroom whose names are delicately etched on some of the them. I can tell that they were written by pre-school hands who had just learned how to write because she had taught them.
She whispers memories of my brother, sister and I as I hang our hand made ornaments. One was my first cross stitching project when I was in junior high. Each one is delicately placed so that it hangs just right. All of them are hung...even the ones who are so old they are beginning to break. Each one was a treasure to my mom. Therefore, they are a treasure to me. The tears begin to fall as my heart aches to tell her one more time how precious her life was to me. She taught me everything. She taught me how to enjoy the special moments and embrace the simple ones.
I miss my mom so very much at Christmas time! I will always put her tree up and add each ornament. I pray that I always hear her voice while I hang each one.

Day One Slice of Life
I clicked submit. It is finished!! The sun is shining brighter because I can see the end in sight!
The thrill of writing the last word and getting, yet, another assignment done fills my heart with glee! One more week...one more week, and then I will be done with this twelve hour extended journey that has swiped my joy and robbed my precious hours. I had no idea how difficult it would be to have a full ride of college hours while teaching and taking pictures.
However, I have a goal!
I want to complete this goal!
So, for this moment, I feel empowered! I hit submit!

A Slice of Life
The beginning of something is usually difficult and a little scary! My kids and I are starting a new adventure this week! We are beginning a 31 day challenge to write about a slice of our life each day!
Some of my kids are so excited about doing this, and some are really not very excited!! However, I am challenging all of them to do it!

My Favorite Sentence
This is truly a hard blog for me to write because I love and adore James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. It is full of exquisite figurative language and some of the most amazing adjectives! The kids laugh at me because I am constantly asking them to close their eyes and listen to this sentence. Being able to imagine the words come alive, is essential to understanding Dahl's book.
They have the assignment of pulling one sentence out of their reading that they love. Therefore, I will pull one out, too.
“James’s little face was glowing with excitement, his eyes were as big and bright as two stars.”
We focus on figurative language a lot in 4th grade. They learn how to understand it when they read, write them, and love them. I adore similes!!! I adore them!!! So, that is why I pulled this sentence out of the book! It is awesome!!

Our class is reading Tales of 4th Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. Today, we read chapters 5 and 6. I absolutely love the reactions that the students have when we read the chapters in Reader's Theater.
The laughter is fabulous!
My goal is for them to realize that reading is awesome and evokes emotion! I love sharing this book with my class!!

I am currently reading The Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan. I am absolutely LOVING the books that Riordan writes. I am actually reading them backwards because I started with the Heros series this summer. I didn't think I was going to like it, but I loved it!
Each demigod has become someone that I love and adore! I enjoy reading their stories and trying to figure out where they are headed! I love being a part of their world.
For years, I have had 4th graders tell me that they would love for me to read them because they thought I would enjoy them. I thought I would not like them at all because they are not my normal genre of book. However, they were so very right!

Summer Reading
This is where you are going to type about your summer reading. You need to list books that you have read. You need to tell what you liked about them and what you didn't like. You need to write about why or why not you would tell a friend to read this book.
This summer I read the Heros series by Rick Riordan
